MACKINAW CITY, Mich. (WOOD) Some amazing outdoor opportunities for easy summer getaways happen right in Northern Michigan; specifically, Emmet County.

Emmet County is known for its beautiful cities like Petoskey, Harbor Springs, and Bay Harbor; although, anyone who finds science and nature interesting would also enjoy The Headlands International Dark Sky Park. The park is located just west of Mackinaw City.

The Headlands is one of 12 international dark sky parks in the world. Its wonderful free programs tied to celestial events make it a great destination for summer fun.

Astrophotography is made easy at dark sky parks like The Headlands. About 10,000 stars are visible with just the naked eye!

Although it is a dark sky park, The Headlands has many fun activities to do during the day, like hiking the Dark Sky Discovery Trail and learning about the planets! The park is off the beaten path, yet hundreds of people come out for the free events that take place there.

One fun event called “Nature’s Fireworks” will happen on Saturday, July 5, from 9 to 11 p.m. at the Dark Sky Viewing Area. Afterwards, there will be some sky viewing at The Headlands, finding the natural red, white and blue in the night sky.

The Headlands even has a guest house inside the park that you can rent!

Visit The Headlands website to find out about other events on their calendar, get information about visiting, and find a list of nearby campgrounds.
