Motorcyclist dead after crash near Sparta

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A motorcyclist was killed in a crash west of Sparta Friday evening.

The Kent County Sheriff's Department on the scene of a crash that left a motorcyclist dead. (July 4, 2014)It happened just before 6:20 p.m. on 13 Mile Road near Fruit Ridge Avenue in Sparta Township.

44-year-old Eric Vanslyke of Sparta was headed west on 13 Mile when his Suzuki motorcycle collided with a car that was trying to back into a driveway, the Kent County Sheriff’s Department said.

The sheriff’s department said speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash. Vanslyke was wearing a helmet.

The crash remains under investigation.
