GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — The Grand Haven High School varsity boy’s basketball coach has died.

Steve Hewitt passed away on Tuesday, according to a release from Grand Haven High School. The Grand Haven Tribune is reporting Hewitt collapsed while jogging.

“Steve was just an incredible person, an amazing counselor, and a great coach,” GHHS Principal Tracy Wilson says. “We are in shock and deeply saddened by this loss.”

The district will have a crisis team available at the high school starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Hewitt had a 14-year coaching career in the district, beginning in 2000 when he was hired as the 9th grade girls basketball coach.

In 2002 he coached 6th grade boys intramural basketball and was hired as the JV girls basketball coach. Hewitt then became the varsity boys basketball coach in 2005.

Hewitt also worked as a counselor at Grand Haven High School.

“Steve touched so many students’ and staff’s lives over the years,” Wilson adds. “He was a valued staff member, and our district will be impacted immensely.”

In April, Grand Haven Area Public Schools’ athletic director Robin Bye died after a battle with cancer. He was 56.
