GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — An 87-year-old woman was killed after an SUV collided with a car Tuesday morning.

It happened around 8 a.m. at the intersection of Forest Hills Avenue SE and Cascade Road in Grand Rapids Township, according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Department.

A 2007 Honda Accord headed north on Forest Hill was turning left onto Cascade Road when it was hit by a southbound 2002 GMC Yukon.

The Honda was struck on the passenger’s side door. Passenger Hope Kappes, 87, was taken to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Ninety-year-old Calvin Kappes, who was driving the Accord, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized.

The 17-year-old driver of the Yukon was taken to the hospital with back and neck pain.

Everyone involved was wearing their seat belt, the sheriff’s department said. Alcohol was not a factor.
