BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A fire at the historic Bedford Mill in Battle Creek is now being investigated as an arson.
Police received calls that the building was on fire just before midnight Wednesday, but by the time they arrived the building was already engulfed in flames.
“There was a tremendous amount of heat coming across the road,” said Bedford Township Fire Chief Larry Cochensparger. “There was no saving anything, just a defensive fire all the way through.”
The building located at M-37 and Hutchinson Road had been around for about 150 years. The historic landmark had been bought by a printing company and was being used for storage.
This marks the second attempt at arson in about a month. However, last time it was caught early enough that crews were able to put the fire out before too much damage was done.
Vandalism at the Bedford Mill has been an ongoing problem for years.
