GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Three new “parklets” in downtown Grand Rapids are expected to go in by the end of the month.

Wednesday, the Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority approved the parklets —  parking spots turned into outdoor seating for restaurants.

The three parklets going up this month will be in front of:

  • McFadden’s on Ionia Avenue SW, north of Oakes Street;
  • Grand Rapids Brewing Company on Ionia, south of Fulton Street;
  • Stella’s Lounge on Commerce Avenue SW, north of Oakes.

The parklets will create a temporary outdoor seating area, which the businesses wouldn’t otherwise have space for. Each will have roughly five tables to seat about 20 people.

The cost to install just one parklet is about $27,000. The DDA has agreed foot the bill for about half of that.

The three parklets are a pilot program of sorts. If all goes well, they may go up every summer.
