HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — One of two people accused in the murder of a Holland man testified against his co-defendant Wednesday.
Prosecutors say Maryann Castorena and Anthony DeLaGarza murdered 38-year-old Jose Hernandez outside his Park Township apartment in January.
Castorena, 49, is Hernandez’s ex-girlfriend and DeLaGarza, 19, had lived with him for a time. Investigators say the motive was Hernandez’s $1.5 million life insurance policy.
During Castorena’s Wednesday preliminary hearing, DeLaGarza testified against her. He explained what he says happened after he attacked Hernandez.
“(Castorena) asked me if I did it. I said I tried. I hit him, but he wouldn’t go down. She then told me that if he turned into a vegetable, she wouldn’t get any money and she needs to the money,” DeLaGarza said.
A judge decided there was enough evidence to send Castorena to trial on three charges: open murder, conspiracy to commit murder and solicitation of murder — a charge added Wednesday.
DeLaGarza waived his hearing last month and is also headed to trial.
