KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A long-serving Kalamazoo pastor will celebrated his 100th birthday Thursday.

Pastor Louis Grother came to Zion Lutheran Church in 1948.

During his time in West Michigan, he started campus ministries at Western Michigan University and served as a chaplain for the Kalamazoo police and fire departments.

He retired in 1984, but remained active with his church.

For more than 60 years he held weekly services at the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital.

“Great experience to be among them,” said Pastor Grother. “And I think the most interesting part of the whole thing is that almost every Tuesday someone said, ‘Well, this is my last day here.’ That’s a wonderful thing that happens that way.”

Zion Lutheran Church will hold a special service honoring Pastor Grother’s 100th birthday on July 13.
