1 hit, killed by train in Bridgman

BRIDGMAN, Mich. (WOOD) — A pedestrian was hit and killed by a train in Berrien County Saturday night.

It happened around 10 p.m. in the 4200 block of Lake Street in Bridgman, according to the Bridgman Police Department.

The victim was identified Sunday afternoon as 20-year-old Austin Thackston of St. Joseph.

Witnesses told police Thackston was hit by the train while trying run across the railroad tracks. They said the gates were down and the warning lights were activated at the time.

Thackston  was located a short distance from the road and pronounced dead at the scene.

Bridgman police, Michigan State Police and CSX Railroad investigators are looking into the death. They are awaiting the results of toxicology tests from Thackston.
