Grandmother killed in crash on M-50

BOWNE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A grandmother was killed in a crash north of Freeport Tuesday afternoon.

The single-vehicle crash shut down M-50/92nd Street between Wingeier Avenue and Freeport Avenue in southeastern Kent County for hours. It reopened just after 8 p.m.

A woman and her three grandchildren, described by a witness as ages 10 and 13, were involved the crash. Michigan State Police say the driver swerved, over-corrected, lost control and ended up in the ditch. A witness said the vehicle hit a stump.

A nearby resident said she rushed outside to help after the crash and that both she and another witness called 911.

The grandmother was killed.

One of the passengers was pinned in the vehicle and had to be rescued, a witness said. That passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The other passengers were able to get out of the vehicle by themselves and seemed OK, according to the witness.

A witness said it was not raining at the time of the crash, but the condition of the road is unknown.

The victim’s name has not yet been released.
