GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A longtime Christian radio host who has already been charged with sexually assaulting an 11-year-old boy now faces separate federal charges.

Charges of sexual exploitation of a child and possession of child pornography were filed against John Balyo Wednesday, a federal court document shows.

The sexual exploitation charge stems from an April 19 incident in Kalamazoo County, the document says, and alleges that Balyo took sexually explicit photos of a boy around the age of 12.

The government also alleges that Balyo was in possession of multiple images of child pornography.

Balyo was arrested June 20 as the result of a investigation into a man named Ronald Moser. Police say Balyo paid Moser to arrange sexual encounters with young boys.

One of the meetings allegedly happened at a Battle Creek hotel in May. The 11-year-old victim in that case told investigators he was allegedly sexually assaulted by both Balyo and Moser. A police report says the boy also said the men took photographs of the assault.

Balyo allegedly admitted to the May sexual assault. He was charged in Calhoun County with one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

He also allegedly directed police to his storage unit in Plainfield Township, where federal investigators found what they described as a “bondage kit.”

Federal agencies, the Michigan State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Battle Creek Police Department have been involved in the investigation.

Balyo was ordered to forfeit several electronic items in connection to the federal charges, including an iMac computer; external hard drives, thumb drives, memory cards, compact flash cards and removal storage media “containing materials relating to the sexual exploitation of children;” photographic equipment found in Balyo’s house the day of his arrest; everything investigators discovered at Balyo’s storage unit; and “all material transferred to a third party or parties … that relates to the sexual abuse of exploitation of children,” the document says.

Balyo, 35, was a radio host with Christian station WCSG, which cut ties with him the day after his arrest at a Christian music festival in Gaylord, Mich.
