Organization to give away 1,500 backpacks

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) – Lakeshore Backpacks for Kids is holding backpack giveaways at five Muskegon County-area churches in August, just in time for the start of the new school year.

The organization will give away 1,500 backpacks filled with school supplies at the churches on a first-come, first-serve basis, according to a release.

Lakeshore Backpacks for Kids is working to raise $20,000 to pay for the giveaway, as each backpack costs about $10, organizers said. The five churches involved provided the largest financial backing for the giveaway, with other local businesses and organizations donating as well.

Children who want a backpack must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and both child and adult must have identification with them.

The churches where backpacks will be given away include:

Saturday, Aug. 2 – Holton

Resource fairs will also be held during the giveaways, with varying services and provided. Some will have free haircuts or vision and hearing screenings, while others will provide free food or representatives from area health and human service agencies, the release said.
