PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — One man has been arrested, while police continue to search for another suspect after an alleged shoplifting incident at a Walmart store in Portage.

The Portage Department of Public Safety received a call from Walmart employees at 8350 Shaver Road around 4 a.m. Thursday that a man had stolen from the store and then drove off at a high rate of speed.

After leaving the parking lot, police say he lost control of the car and crashed on the east side of Shaver Road.

The suspect, a 25-year-old Vicksburg resident, was arrested for operating under the influence of drugs and is being held at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

There was also a passenger in the suspect’s car during the incident who took off on foot and was not found. He is described as a tall black man in his thirties, wearing a white coat.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Portage Department of Public Safety at 269.329.4567 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100, or www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.
