To The Point: Rep. Justin Amash and Brian Ellis

Incumbent Rep. Justin Amash faces challenger Brian Ellis in the Third Congressional District Republican primary.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The two Republicans vying for the Third Congressional District seat — incumbent Rep. Justin Amash and challenger Brian Ellis — told Rick Albin this week why they think they are the best candidate to represent West Michigan citizens in Washington.

Ellis said he is running because he “didn’t feel like we were being effectively represented.”

“Justin Amash talks a conservative game, but doesn’t vote that way,” he said.

Amash said he wasn’t surprised when he found out Ellis was running.

“I had some people who told me if I didn’t do a favor for them, they would run a primary opponent against me and that’s precisely what happened. So none of it surprised me. But I’ve made a lot of effort to represent the entire district,” Amash said.

Ellis has earned some big-name endorsements from Right to Life and former Congressman Pete Hoekstra. But Amash has told 24 Hour News 8 that Ellis is “not a serious opponent.”

The Third Congressional District covers parts or all of Barry, Calhoun, Ionia, Kent and Montcalm counties. The primary election is set for this Tuesday, Aug. 5.
