Man arrested after hit and run crash

STURGIS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man is in custody following a hit and run crash that he caused while allegedly drunk.

The suspect, a 35-year-old Sturgis man, crashed a 1997 Ford Explorer into a utility pole at the intersection of M-66 and Fawn River Road around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

Several witnesses saw the man take off in the vehicle and told police who were able to track him down a few minutes later on Fawn River Road near Balk Road.

The suspect’s vehicle had stopped running and he was attempting to catch a ride from a friend when officers arrived.

The man was arrested for operating while under the influence and hit and run. Additional charges are pending for parole violation and violations to Michigan’s Sex Offender Registry.

Alcohol and possibly drugs are factors in the crash which are under investigation.

The suspect is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.
