Police: Lawhorn shed 1 tear after killing boy, 9

KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOOD) — Jamarion Lawhorn, the 12-year-old boy who is accused of stabbing a 9-year-old boy to death, said he wanted to die and wanted to take someone with him, according to court documents.

When Lawhorn was in an ambulance on the way to St. Mary’s Hospital for suicidal behavior on Monday evening after the stabbing occurred, he told paramedics he had been planning the stabbing for over a year, according to court documents.

“He wanted to die and thought if he were arrested, he would have been put on the electric chair or lethal injection because he saw it on TV,” one paramedic said, the documents show.

At the hospital, Lawhorn told police he had taken several unknown pills, took a knife and went to the playground, police said. The boy said he didn’t know the victim, Michael “Connor” Verkerke, or any of the other kids and didn’t have any interaction with them “besides stabbing the kid in the back.”

According to the documents, Lawhorn said he didn’t know how many times he had stabbed Connor before he ran away to find police. Police said in the report Lawhorn wasn’t remorseful.

“He claimed he did this because he was tired with life and wanted to die. He said he is a bad person and gets in trouble all the time. He said that he would get mocked for this at school and get called dumb and black,” the documents said.

It was when Lawhorn was in his hospital room that his mother told him Connor had died. According to the documents, Lawhorn’s expression softened slightly when his mother told him he was going to be gone for a long time to face the consequences for his actions.

“Shortly after his mother left the room, I saw Lawhorn shed a single tear, but immediately became stoned faced again and remained this way the rest of the time I was with him,” said an officer who was in the hospital room.

When police interviewed Lawhorn’s mother, she said she couldn’t recall any indicators that Lawhorn would attack another child.

She said Lawhorn would play with fire as a child — until about three years ago — and he once lit her bed on fire to see what would happen, according to the documents.

The kitchen knife Lawhorn used had an eight-inch blade. When police arrived at the scene of the stabbing, he yelled, “I just stabbed someone, I want to die, I’m tired of life,” the documents show. He also asked if there would be anyone at the jail who would kill him.

Lawhorn is being charged as an adult in juvenile court with open murder. he’s expected back in court Monday for a preliminary hearing.
