GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The new father who was brutally beaten by a group of teens on a Grand Rapids playground in late May has died, his sister said.

Scott Simerson, 24, was beaten on May 23 on the playground outside Sibley Elementary on Sibley Street NW. He sustained a severe brain injury and was in the hospital for months.

Simerson’s sister confirmed he died at 3 p.m. Sunday.

“He had a daughter and a fiancee,” Emily Simerson said. “He was a wonderful person. He was the sweetest person you’d ever meet. … He was a good dad.”

She said he left behind a large family, including 11 siblings, two nieces, three nephews, and his baby daughter.

“He will be greatly missed by our family,” Emily Simerson said.

The Kent County Medical Examiner has declared the death a homicide.

Grand Rapids Police Department Lt. Pat Merrill confirmed Monday that four suspects were in custody in connection to the case and that police were not looking for any more.

Not long after the attack, a 15- and 16-year-old were charged. It’s not yet clear how the charges against the teens will be modified.
