KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Monday marked the first day of school for the inaugural class of the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine.

The class of 2018 is made up of 54 students who hail from 14 states. Twenty-three of the inaugural students are from Michigan.

The medical school is named for Kalamazoo orthopedic surgeon and Stryker Corporation founder Homer Stryker. Stryker’s granddaughter donated $100 million to launch the school.
