GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — New on-street, outdoor dining spaces at some restaurants in downtown Grand Rapids opened Tuesday.

Three parklets opened around 4 p.m. in front of Grand Rapids Brewing Co. on Ionia Avenue SW south of Fulton Street, Stella’s Lounge at 53 Commerce Ave. SW and McFadden’s Restaurant and Saloon on Ionia Avenue SW north of Oaks Street SW.

The parklets are small patios built over parking spots outside the restaurants. They seat about 20.

They were scheduled to open earlier this month, but were delayed due to a permit problem.

The three parklets are part of a pilot program. If everything goes well, they may go up every summer.

Each parklet cost about $27,000 to install, about half of which was paid for by the Downtown Development Authority. Barfly Ventures, which owns the three restaurants, paid for the rest.
