GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Meijer LPGA Classic handed over a big check Wednesday to help out food pantries.
The Meijer Simply Give program received $600,000 to help food pantries all over the Midwest.
Meijer says the donation comes after the success of the first-ever Meijer LPGA Classic, which was held at Blythefield Country Club earlier this month. The money was raised through a concert, a 5K run and a Celebrity Chef Cookoff.
The $600,000 will be divided among about 200 food pantries.
The winner of the Celebrity Cookoff, “The Chew” co-host Carla Hall, chose four pantries to receive $10,000 each — Love, Inc., United Church Outreach Food Pantry, North End Community Food Pantry and Northwest Food Pantry.
Meijer says the Classic was a bigger success than expected.
“It wasn’t just about golf, although the golf was amazing. It was really about tying back to the community,” said Meijer Executive Vice President of Retail Janet Emerson at Wednesday morning’s donation announcement at the Northwest Food Pantry in Grand Rapids.
Meijer says it will double match customer contributions to Simply Give between Sept. 4 and Sept. 6.
