CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – A man traveling to Texas was arrested Tuesday after Transportation Security Administration screeners found a loaded handgun in his carry-on luggage at Gerald R. Ford International Airport, according to a TSA official.

The 38-year-old Steven Jay Vaniwaanden was flying from Grand Rapids to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport when the 9mm Kahr PM9 gun was found at a security checkpoint, the TSA said.

TSA screeners called local law enforcement authorities who came to arrest Vaniwaanden. He is facing one misdemeanor weapons charge and has already been released from the Kent County jail.

Tuesday’s incident was the sixth time a weapon was found in carry-on luggage at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport this year, according to a release from the TSA.

In 2013, the TSA said it found 1,813 firearms at security checkpoints nationwide, and so far in 2014, more than 1,000 have been found.
