SARANAC, Mich. (WOOD) — It has been more than a month since police said Brady Oestrike killed Charlie Oppenneer, Brooke Slocum and their unborn child.
Brooke’s Uncle, Dave Holcomb, held a benefit Saturday for Brooke’s family to help them cover the costs of Brooke’s and her unborn child’s funeral.
Brooke was going to name her child Audi Lynn.
“Its been very hard on the family. You know we are recovering slowly. Its one day at a time. We will get past this. Brookie will always be Brookie, Audi will always be in our hearts forever,” said Holcomb.
Since then the family has had to cover the funeral costs for both Brooke and her unborn child.
“Funeral costs, and burial and a tomb stone you’re look at the area of 12, $13,000,” said Holcomb.
Saturday as many as a thousand people showed up at the fundraiser.
Holcomb said many of the those that showed up were people the family didn’t even know.
“Very overwhelming. Very phenomenal to see the amount of support we have had, from the community. And people I haven’t met before have stepped up and helped out a lot with this benefit and I’m very very grateful,” Holcomb said.
The event today they wanted to focus not on what happened to Brooke but rather who she was as a person.
“I’ve seen a few tears today, that’s okay. It’s a celebration of Brook and Audi’s life and we want to remember them and all the beautifulness they were,” said Holcomb.
Holcomb said any extra money raised today that didn’t need to go to help the family they would donate to a charity that helps women who suffer from abuse.
