SILVER CREEK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man remained in critical condition in a northern Indiana hospital Sunday after nearly drowning in Cass County.
Abdi Adan went into Dewey Lake in Silver Creek Township, northwest of Dowagiac, around 1:20 p.m. Saturday. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said he entered the water to help his sister after she began to have trouble with her kayak.
Adan, 24, of Wheaton, Ill. was not wearing a life jacket when he went into the water, the sheriff’s office says.
He soon began struggling and went underwater. Neighbors heard his calls for help, found him in about 15 feet of water, and pulled him to shore. They performed CPR.
Once emergency personnel arrived, they were able to get a pulse and airlifted Adan to a South Bend hospital.
Sunday, he was still in intensive care, the sheriff’s office said.
