Alleged drunk driver loses control, crashes into ditch

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — An alleged drunk driver who lost control and crashed into the ditch was three times the legal limit, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident happened after 3 p.m. Sunday on 72nd Avenue and Country Road 681.

Juan Benavidez, 31, of Hartford was driving southbound on CR 681 at a high rate of speed when he tried to turn east onto 72nd Avenue, but lost control and crashed into the ditch on the north side of 72nd Avenue, according to a news release.

Benavidez was the only person in the vehicle and was also under the influence of alcohol, driving on a suspended license and had no insurance. He also had a valid warrant out for his arrest out of Benton Township Police Department, the release said.

The preliminary breath test results were more than three times the legal limit, according to the news release.

Benavidez was arrested and is lodged at the Van Buren County Jail.
