Suspects escape police after high-speed chase

PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) – Portage police engaged in a high-speed chase after two men stole a computer from a Wal-Mart Monday.

Wal-Mart employees told the Portage Department of Public Safety dispatch that two black men had tried to steal laptop computers and left the parking lot in a white Dodge Charger with an out-of-state license plate, according to a news release.

Around 3 a.m., an officer responding to the Wal-Mart on 8350 Shaver Road noticed a vehicle matching the description driving north on Oakland Drive at a high rate of speed.

The officer turned on his lights and siren, but the vehicle didn’t stop and continued north on Oakland Drive before heading on to eastbound I-94.

The vehicle then exited I-94 at Sprinkle Road to E Michigan Avenue. The vehicle then started heading westbound when officers eventually lost sight of the car and ended the chase.

Upon further investigation, authorities determined that at least one desktop computer was taken from the Wal-Mart. When one of the suspects was leaving, he indicated he had a handgun and threatened an employee if they tried to stop him, according to the release.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Portage Department of Public Safety at 269.329.4567 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100 or online.
