BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — A 5-year-old boy is recovering after he apparently shot himself by accident Tuesday evening in Battle Creek.

The boy was playing in a neighbor’s backyard in the area of Ann Avenue and N. Washington Avenue when he found a gun and shot himself in the leg around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to Battle Creek police.

The boy was able to make it home to his mom and his parents then drove him to Bronson Hospital in Battle Creek. He is expected to be OK.

Police have not been able to locate the gun and say no witnesses were around at the time of the shooting.

“We have not located the gun at this time. We combed the area that was described by the child,” said BCPD Det. Sgt. James Martens. “Obviously, it’s a little boy who was hurt at the time and may not have been able to give a good description. We’ll probably go back out again today and possibly get some K-9 units to see if we can locate the gun.”

Police were able to conclude the shooting was an accident from the trajectory of the bullet wound in the boy’s leg, which showed the shooting happened at close range.

The shooting remains under investigation.
