ALLEGAN, Mich. (WOOD) — A former Allegan County commissioner will spend time in jail for stealing thousands of dollars from his friend’s bank account.

Terry Burns was sentenced Monday to four moths in jail and 18 months probation, according to the Allegan County Circuit Court.

Burns was charged in February with embezzlement of between $20,000 and $50,000 or more from a vulnerable adult. He pleaded guilty in June.

Authorities say Burns took money from his friend Joe Migas after petitioning to become Migas’s guardian. Burns withdrew several thousand dollars from Migas’s bank account over the court of three months in late 2013.

How much restitution Burns will be required to make will be determined at a December hearing.
