Fire at Holland middle school caused by lightning

HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) – South Shore Christian Middle School in Holland was evacuated Tuesday afternoon after the building was hit by lightning, according to the Holland Department of Public Safety.

Students were evacuated after smoke was seen at the building just before 2:15 p.m., according to HDPS officials.

When firefighters got to the scene, smoke was coming out of the roof and was also found inside a second-story gymnasium, a Holland Fire Department release said.

Firefighters were able to confine the fire quickly, and shortly before 3 p.m., HDPS tweeted the fire was out.

No one was injured in the incident.

The fire caused some damage to the building’s roof and the ceiling below – estimated at less than $5,000, fire officials said.
