IONIA, Mich. (WOOD) Choosing a college is something a student and parents put a whole lot of time into, but another decision at the beginning of your child’s education can be equally important!
The Great Start Collaborative for Ionia and Montcalm Counties works with parents to help them choose the right preschool for their child. Preschool programs are essential in getting kids off to a good start at school. Preschool attendance can lower the likelihood of incarceration rates, welfare costs, and increase property value.
Preschool helps build the foundation for your child’s education. It’s more than just nap and snack time. It helps with social skills, following directions, and helps prepare kids for the rigorous K-12 school program.
Some tips for parents when visiting a preschool is to look for a warm, caring relationship from the staff. Consider the environment in regards to safety and from a child’s perspective. Is the program play-based? Look for a curriculum that promotes independence and problem solving.
Michigan has created a website for parents to see quality of preschools or daycares. Great Start Connect has a rating for each facility. Providers are required to provide information on staff qualifications, curriculum, assessments, how they involve parents, and nutrition. If a provider chooses to have a higher rating, the state will come and do an assessment to adjust their rating accordingly.
