GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man has been sentenced to prison for entering a Grand Rapids apartment and sexually assaulting a woman on New Year’s Day.

Jose Suarez-Cruz was sentenced to between 20 months and 20 years in prison for first-degree home invasion and another 10 months in jail for attempted fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Suarez-Cruz, 29, entered into a plea agreement in the case in July.

The victim in the case said she left her door unlocked when she went to bed on New Year’s Eve because she was expecting her boyfriend. She woke up to a man having sex with her and participated because she thought it was her boyfriend. She realized it was Cruz after she turned the lights on.

He is an undocumented immigrant.
