Teen dies when car she was in hits pole and tree

WHITEHALL, Mich. (WOOD) – A 15-year-old girl has died after the car she was in hit a utility pole and tree Thursday.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. in the 400 block of an alley between Mears Avenue and Division Street in Whitehall, according to a news release.

The car, driven by an 18-year-old Whitehall man with four passengers inside, was traveling south in the alley when it hit a utility pole and tree.

Makala Stever-Knapp died from injuries she received during the crash. One passenger received life-threatening injuries and the other two passengers had minor injuries. The driver wasn’t injured.

The names of the injured passengers are not being released because they are minors, the release said.

The driver is being lodged in the Muskegon County jail pending charges, according to the Whitehall Police Department

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash, but speed is believed to be a factor, according to authorities.

The crash remains under investigation by Michigan State Police.
