Man pleads to fatal drunk driving crash

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man has admitting to driving drunk in February, causing a crash that left a mother of five dead.

Jay Hobbs, 48, pleaded guilty as charged Tuesday.

The wreck happened on Feb. 15 on the Alden Nash Avenue bridge over I-96, north of Lowell. Tonya Beha was pushing a van that had run out of gas when she was struck by Hobbs’ pickup truck and killed. The 36-year-old from Lake Odessa had five children.

Hobbs ran away from the scene and was soon arrested in a nearby wooded area.

He was charged with operating while intoxicated causing death and leaving the scene of a deadly crash.

Sentencing is scheduled for October.
