GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Former NBA player and Orlando Magic general manager Otis Smith has been named the head coach of Grand Rapids’ new NBA Development League team

Smith will lead the Grand Rapids Drive.

Smith has never been a head coach before, though he did play in the NBA. He played for the Denver Nuggets from 1986 to 1987, then the Golden State Warriors from 1987 to 1989, then the Magic between 1989 and 1992.

He was the Magic’s GM between 2006 and 2012.

Detroit Pistons President Stan Van Gundy made the trip to Grand Rapids Wednesday for Smith’s introduction as the Drive’s coach. The pair had a successful partnership in Orlando, with Smith working as general manager and Van Gundy as coach.

Now, Van Gundy will do the hiring and Smith will develop prospective Pistons.
