GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman accused of sexually assaulting a child relative has died, a family member told 24 Hour News 8.
Kathy Eastman, 60, had been charged with five counts of sexual assault. She was being held in the Kent County Correctional Facility’s infirmary due to a medical condition, according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Department.
The sheriff’s department says that due to that condition, Eastman had to undergo surgery on Friday, Aug. 29. Arrangements were made for a guard to remain with Eastman at the hospital during a short stay. She returned to the jail infirmary on Aug. 30.
Around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, jail staff found Eastman unresponsive but breathing. She was taken to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery.
The sheriff’s department said Eastman was pronounced dead around 7:30 a.m. Monday.
Kent County Undersheriff Jon Hess confirmed Eastman suffered a cardiac arrest and an aneurysm, but he could not confirm a cause of death.
The death will be investigated, the sheriff’s department says, and the Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office will review the case. Foul play is not suspected.
Kathy Eastman’s husband Jerry Eastman, 56, still faces identical sexual assault charges.
The pair was accused of sexually assaulting a young relative for years while babysitting.
Other relatives then apparently told detectives they had been sexually assaulted by the pair in the 1970s and 1980s.
