ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities in Ottawa County are investigating a report of a sexual assault at an apartment complex near Grand Valley State University’s Allendale campus.
The alleged attack happened around 3:50 a.m. Sunday at Country Place Apartments on 48th Avenue, west of campus.
A woman told the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office that she awoke to find an unknown man in her apartment. She said he sexually assaulted her.
“We don’t know who this guy is. He could be living next door, he could be in this complex. He could be on campus. He could be a student at Grand Valley. We don’t know and that’s what really scary about it,” said a GVSU student who lives at the apartment complex.
GVSU sent out a safety alert to its students Thursday. University officials said they didn’t send anything sooner because it wasn’t their investigation, adding that GVSU got the facts of the case from the sheriff’s office only Thursday.
Students who live in the area say they are worried and are taking extra precautions to stay safe.
“It also made me even more aware of my surroundings wherever I go. If it’s starting to get dark outside and I’m walking home from class, I make sure who’s around me, where I am,” the student said. “We always make sure the door is locked now and make sure the bar is locked on our windows and everything. Its kind of freaky.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 616.738.4000 or Silent Observer at 877.887.4536.
