New venue features African-American culture

The Mixx. (Sept. 13, 2014)

KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOOD) — A new venue showcasing African-American talent and culture is taking hold in the Grand Rapids area.

“The Mixx” is tucked away off 28th Street and Ratcliff Avenue SE across from Woodland Mall. It has been open now for two months and got its name because it features a mix of social events and activities.

“I travel to Chicago a lot, DC, Philly, and saw really awesome things and thought in West Michigan, we really don’t have these outlets,” founder Greg Peacock said. “And it was my aspiration to come back and bring it home so we can have wonderful things to do that’s clean and sophisticated, yet it gives you all that urban appeal that we’re looking for.”

Saturday’s theme was “pearls and pampering.” Vendors sold handcrafted jewelry and health and beauty products.

Friday night featured jazz and coffee. Next week, The Mixx will have poetry and spoken word.

A list of events scheduled at The Mixx can be found at its website.
