CLAM LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids-area woman was killed early Saturday when the car she was riding in collided with a semi-truck south of Cadillac.
It happened just before 5 a.m. on M-115 near S. 39 Road in Wexford County’s Clam Lake Township, according to Michigan State Police.
Witnesses told MSP that a car headed southeast on M-115 at a high rate of speed tried to pass another vehicle. The driver then lost control and the car skidded into the path of a semi-truck headed the other direction.
The vehicles collided, and the rear of the car was “sheared off,” MSP said. A passenger who had been sleeping in the back seat was ejected.
The passenger, 24-year-old Nicole Aryne Popa from Caledonia, was killed.
The driver of the car ran away from the scene of the crash, but was later arrested for leaving the scene and operating under the influence causing death. He’s also suspected of breaking into a garage after running from the crash.
That driver received treatment for minor injuries. The driver and passenger in the semi were not hurt.
MSP says the drivers of both vehicles and the passenger in the semi were wearing their seat belts. Alcohol or drugs are believed to be a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
