Charges in New Buffalo open meetings flap

NEW BUFFALO, Mich. (AP) — Three members of a city council in southwestern Michigan are accused of violating state law by deciding to fire the city manager in private.

The Berrien County prosecutor says Peter Weber, Donna Messinger and George Scarlitis are charged with a misdemeanor. They’re due in court by Wednesday.

Over objections by residents, William “Rusty” Geisler was fired by the New Buffalo City Council on Aug. 18. But prosecutor Michael Sepic says his dismissal actually was hatched in private 12 days earlier.

Messages seeking comment from Weber, Messinger and Scarlitis were not immediately returned Saturday.

The misdemeanor carries a maximum fine of $1,000.
