CAMPBELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A family’s house in southwest Ionia County was destroyed in a fire Monday afternoon.

The fire broke out at the house on Hastings Road near Midway Road in Campbell Township, southwest of Clarksville.

Fire officials said there was a report that people nearby may have heard an explosion. Neighbors discovered the fire and called 911.

“We came down, called Central Dispatch. Flames were already coming out of the house. They told us to make sure nobody was in the house, so I knocked down the slider door to make sure nobody was in there. Once that was done, then all the fire department came out,” neighbor Jacob Tjapkes said.

Crews from four fire departments responded to the fully-involved fire. The house appears to be a total loss.

No one was home when the fire started and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. A Michigan State Police fire investigator is being called in to help determine how it started.
