MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) – An 88-year-old man was shot in the stomach Sunday night when he walked outside of his house to check on a strange noise.
It happened around 8:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Sumner Street, according to the Muskegon Police Department. A man told police he heard noises outside and his dogs barking. When he went to the front door, he said, he was shot.
The victim was taken to the hospital for surgery. He is in serious but stable condition.
Police say they can’t be certain the shooting actually happened outside. They searched with metal detectors, but didn’t find any shell casings.
Muskegon Director of Public Safety Jeffrey Lewis said that the bullet still lodged in the victim could reveal evidence if it can be removed. He also said that the victim suffered some organ damage from fragments of that bullet.
Police questioned one of the elderly man’s grandsons, who they said arrived at the house almost simultaneously to the shooting, but he has not been charged.
Neighbors told police that they heard gunfire, but were not able to get a look at the suspect.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting, is asked to call the Muskegon Police Department at 231.724.6750 or Silent Observer at 231.722.7463.
