Man accidentally shot after rifle falls off tractor

LEONIDAS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Police say a man was accidentally shot after a loaded rifle fell off the tractor on which he was riding.

The incident happened at a home in the 28000 block of Wing Road in Leonidas Township, which is located in the northeast corner of St. Joseph County, around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, police said.

The 56-year-old man was on the tractor when a loaded .22 caliber rifle fell off the tire and hit the ground. The gun discharged and he was shot in the ankle.

The victim was in stable condition and taken to Bronson Hospital for further treatment, authorities said.

Police say foul play is not suspected. Alcohol or drugs are also not expected to have played a role.
