KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Democratic state Rep. Sean McCann says he’ll request a recount in the 20th District state Senate race, which a preliminary count shows him losing by 59 votes.

The Kalamazoo County Board of Canvassers says the Kalamazoo lawmaker lost to Republican state Rep. Margaret O’Brien of Portage in the Nov. 4 election.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports that McCann said Thursday that he’s heard from “countless supporters over the past two weeks” who’ve encouraged him to seek a recount.

The final count shows O’Brien with 36,630 votes, or 45.52 percent. McCann has 36,571 votes, or 45.45 percent.

The race also had a strong Libertarian candidate. The county says Lorence Wenke got 7,263 votes, or 9.03 percent.

O’Brien has said she’s confident her win will stand.
