Service dog missing near Portland

PORTLAND, Mich. (WOOD) – A service dog went missing Wednesday from a home in Portland in Ionia County.

Kaj, a golden retriever, went missing around 2 p.m. from on home on Staley Road when he was let out for a bathroom break and never came back.

The dog was being fostered by a family living there while it was trained as a service dog for Jeanne Esch of Traverse City.

Esch’s former service dog died a few months ago, and she was working with Kaj as a replacement.

Esch and the 8-month-old golden retriever have already spent a lot of time together and now she is worried Kaj is lost, hurt or has been taken by someone.

She was expecting to rely on Kaj to help her get dressed, alert her to danger and watch out for her.

If anyone has found Kaj, please call the Ionia County Central Dispatch at 616.527.0400.
