New ‘Nutcracker’ co-creator comes to G.R.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) Excitement is building around the new re-imagined Nutcracker. The incredible production is coming to Grand Rapids in December at DeVos Place. One member of the creative team to revamp the holiday classic is Grand Rapids native Chris Van Allsburg.

Van Allsburg is the author of classics such as “The Polar Express” and “Jumanji.” He is in town for the release of his latest book, “The Misadventures of Sweetie Pie.” A book release celebration is planned in East Grand Rapids, but it has sold out.

Van Allsburg worked with Tony Award winning set designer Eugene Lee, choreographer Val Caniparoli, and Artistic Director Patricia Barker for the new Nutcracker. It will premiere with a red carpet gala event presented by Art Van. The premiere is Thursday, December 11 at DeVos Performance Hall. The black tie event will benefit Hospice of Michigan. A $150 ticket gets you the performance and a reception. For $250, you’re invited to cocktails, dinner, the performance, and an afterglow reception.

The Nutcracker is December 12 through 14 and 19 through 21. For ticket information visit the Grand Rapids Ballet or Ticketmaster websites.
