Apartment fire causes $23K in damage

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — A Battle Creek apartment fire caused some $23,000 in damage Sunday night, according to firefighters.

The fire broke out around 9:45 p.m. on the second floor of a two-unit rental in the 400 block of Cleveland Street, north of Goguac Street.

The fire was contained to the apartment where it started, according to the Battle Creek Fire Department. That apartment is a total loss. The property sustained about $20,000 in damage and there was another $3,000 in damage to the contents of the apartment.

Firefighters say that by stopping the fire from spreading, they saved about $35,000 in property that was in the rest of the building.

No one who lives at the residence was hurt. A firefighter sustained a minor burn while inside the building.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
