Driver falls asleep at wheel, rolls vehicle

ZEELAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – A 47-year-old is recovering after falling asleep at the wheel and rolling her vehicle.

The accident happened Monday shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Byron Road near 52nd Avenue in Zeeland Township, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Luanne Buikema was heading westbound on Byron Road in a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer when she fell asleep and drifted off the right side of the into a ditch.

Buikema woke up and steered back onto the road when the car rolled over, sheriff’s officials said. She was pinned in vehicle and had to be pulled out by Zeeland Township Fire Rescue.

She was taken to the hospital where she is listed in stable condition.
