FREDONIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 20-month-old child near Marshall.
Paramedics were called around 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 18 to the 10000 block of Old US-27 in Fredonia Township for a 20-month-old child who was being unresponsive.
The toddler, identified as Athena Ramey, was taken to the hospital where the child was listed in critical condition.
Athena later died around 2:30 p.m. Dec. 19 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, according to the sheriff’s office.
After a Dec. 22 autopsy, a medical examiner decided that further testing was needed before a definite cause of death could be determined.
A homicide task force comprised of officers from several agencies is still working the case, the sheriff’s department said.
