GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Three members of the Grand Rapids Police Department will attend the funeral of a New York Police Department officer who was murdered while sitting in his patrol car.
GRPD officer David Siver and Lt. Michael Maycroft from the department’s Honor Guard as well as Lt. Patrick Dean are planning to attend NYPD Officer Wenjian Liu’s funeral this weekend.
Officer Liu and and Officer Rafael Ramos were ambushed by a gunman on Dec. 20 while in a patrol car in New York City. Police said the gunman approached the passenger window and opened fire.
Authorities said prior to the shooting, the gunman announced online that he was planning to shoot two “pigs” in retaliation for the police chokehold death of Eric Garner.
GRPD Lt. Dean is originally from New York City and served as an officer with the NYPD for seven years prior to coming to the Grand Rapids Police Department in 1995. His sister and her husband are currently sergeants for the NYPD, his brother is on the NYPD bomb squad, and his father also served NYPD for 38 years before retiring.
According to a release from Grand Rapids police, the officers will be attending on their own time and are participating in the Jet Blue promotion which covers the costs of air fare for officers who wish to attend the funeral.
Officer Ramos’ funeral was attended by GRPD Detective David Gillem on December 27.
