NB I-I96 in Berrien Co. back open after crash

HAGAR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – A portion of northbound I-196 in Berrien County was shut down Friday due to a three-vehicle accident.

Police shut down I-196 near Coloma Road in Hagar Township from 4:30 p.m. till almost 6 p.m. Friday.

A semi-truck driven by 34-year-old Tiwana Singh of Ontario was heading north when he was rear-ended by a Dodge car driven by Esau Whitfield, 18, of Benton Harbor, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office.

After hitting the semi, the Dodge bounced off of the semi and hit a 2015 Cadillac driven by Donald Hutton, 51, of Naperville, deputies said in a news release.

Whitfield and two passengers, 18-year-old Alonzo Parker and 19-year-old Richard Mendez, who were in the vehicle at the time had to be taken to the hospital for injuries, according to the release.

Police say the weather played a role in the accident and alcohol was not a factor.

Authorities diverted traffic off I-196 onto Coloma Road to M-63.
