SPARTA, Mich. (WOOD) Winter can bring about many problems, such as extreme cold and hazardous driving conditions. It’s also a time of year to keep a closer eye on your pets. Dr. Valerie Landeck of Alpine View Animal Hospital has some tips to keep your pet safe, happy, and healthy in the winter months.

Cold Weather Tips for Pets

  • Schedule regular veterinarian checkups
  • Cut back on calories
  • Offer some form of exercise
  • Know your pet’s tolerance level
  • Keep fur dry
  • Trim toenails and fur on paws
  • Be sure your pets have proper identification
  • Watch for subtle changes in attitude and activity
  • Keep an emergency kit at home:
    • Three-day supply of food and water
    • Three-day supply of prescription medications
    • Extra blankets
